3 ways to save on taxes during your divorce

Divorce is, of all things, stressful. It can also put a dent in your finances, and some people are more fortunate than others.

For those not so fortunate, or those just looking to save in general during the divorce process, we include three ways to save on taxes and put you in a better position financially.

Heather Locus, Forbes contributor, provides these ways:

1.) What you want versus what you need

Wants and needs are two sides of the same coin, for many of us, but what is the difference? According to The Balance, a need is “something you have to have” and a want is “something you would like to have”. Food, water, shelter, health, and clothing are the main needs. A new car, new phone, going out to eat at different restaurants? These fall into wants. By narrowing down your purchases to and separating your needs and wants, you’ll have a much better idea of how to control your finances.

2.) Appreciate what you have

The next step, after evaluating and deciding what your wants and needs are, is to take time to reflect on the things you currently own and have. By deciding what’s really important as well as going after it, you’ll be in a much healthier and more positive place.

3.) Budget

It’s one thing to talk about or write down what you want and need, your current expenses, and what you’re grateful for. But the best thing to do is to take action by budgeting out your expenses. Some people may have a way more detailed budget than others, but the trick is to write down every expense that you have. By doing this, you could easily eliminate the unnecessary expenses for next month’s budget.
